Album: Nothing Lasts Forever

All Of You

We’ve been through a lot together
Every day I know ya better
Good and bad, highs and lows, there ain’t much I ain’t seen
I’ve learned all your little ways
How you breathe, the sounds you make
What you love and what you hate and everythin’ between

I know the way we fit together
The angles and the curves
I know the love that you give me
Is more than I deserve
I know the taste of your tears
As I kiss them from your face
And the sound of your cries
As I find your secret place

[Chorus]
The joy and the sadness
The light and the blackness
I know all of you
And I love all of you

I see the girl without the makeup
Smiling sleepy as we wake up
Unguarded, open-hearted, nestled in my arms
And I see through the tough disguise
The mask you wear, the hurt you hide
I see the truth inside and who you really are

I know the way your blue eyes crinkle
When you’re smiling back at me
I know every little wrinkle
But don’t tell you that I see
I know the way you press your lips when
I’ve pissed you off again
And how to let you blow off steam
Until your anger’s spent

[Repeat Chorus]

I know the way that it starts when
You want to fool around
Your hand on my chest slowly
Working your way down
I know the secrets that you’ve kept
The things that make you feel ashamed
‘N you can trust me not to judge you
Only love you just the same

[Repeat Chorus]
[Repeat Chorus]

Nowhere Near Ready

I was cleanin’ out the closet
When I found an old picture
Of you and me in the bottom of a drawer
Somethin’ twisted deep inside me
Don’t know why it surprised me
Cause a part of my heart was always yours

And I guess you can meet the right one at the wrong time
We were just kids, how could we really know?
But I loved every single thing about you
And I broke your heart, when I let you go
I was young, I was foolish, I was twenty
And nowhere near ready

We were foolin’ ‘round and laughin’
Like nothin’ bad could ever happen
Makin’ faces in the boardwalk photo booth
But I guess I thought I’d never keep you
So the best thing was to leave you
I was afraid and I made those fears come true

And you don’t know what you have until you’ve lost it
And you’ve gone and thrown it all away
And I loved every single thing about you
But I told myself that I couldn’t stay
I was young, I was foolish, I was twenty
And nowhere near ready

That memory will always haunt me:
The sound of your voice breakin’
On the phone as you told me you were late
You had three years left of college
And a life you hadn’t started
And a choice there was no good way to make

And I know now nothin’ hurts worse than your first love
Nothin’ cuts you quite as deep
And I loved every single thing about you
Will you forgive me everything that couldn’t be?
I was young, I was foolish, I was twenty
And nowhere near ready

And I guess you can meet the right one at the wrong time
We were just kids, how could we really know?
But I loved everything single thing about you
And it broke my heart, when I let you go
I was young, I was foolish, I was twenty
And nowhere near ready

I’ll Be Your Alibi

It was the only bar in town, tips were good so you stuck around
Despite the boss’s wandering hands
He kept pushing with that shit, another girl mighta up and quit
But you’re the kind to take a stand

They never saw ya comin’ back after work with a baseball bat
They heard a crash, tires cuttin’ loose
And no one caught the license plate as a black car sped away
But they thought the driver looked like you

[Chorus]
If you need me girl, I’ll be your one phone call
I got your back when things get hot
I’ll be there for you and here’s the honest truth
There ain’t a lie I wouldn’t tell for you
Believe me if you need me, I - I - I…
I’ll be your alibi

They found his car windows smashed, all four tires slashed
Deep scratches down the side
Next day, cops came to our door, asking where you were
I said you were with me all that night

[Repeat Chorus]

Believe me if you need me, I - I - I…
I’ll be your alibi

My Beautiful Bride

Bubbles in the champagne
Perfect summer afternoon
Here I stand with my best man
In this brand new blue suit
Then the music starts to play
And all of our guests rise
Waiting for my…
My beautiful bride

My hands are shaking
As your bridesmaid comes down the aisle
Your nephew brings the wedding rings
Wearing the biggest smile
And when I see you in your wedding dress
I can’t help but cry
Waiting for my…
My beautiful bride

And I promise I will love you with everything I have to give
And I’ll be right here by your side as long as we both live

Daisies in your long red hair
Rose petals at your feet
Our eyes lock as you slowly walk
Across the lawn to me
My heart feels like it might burst
As I hold your hand in mine
And take you for my…
My beautiful bride

And I promise I will love you with everything I have to give
And I’ll be right here by your side as long as we both live

And when all the years have flown
And we’re both old and grey
And we look through our wedding book
Reminiscing ‘bout this day
I’ll tell you that I love you still
And until the end of time
You’ll always be my…
My beautiful bride
My beautiful bride

Nothing Lasts Forever

The old man seemed the kinda guy who’d seen it all and still was smilin’
So when he asked me why I was drinking all alone
I told him, “When she left, felt like everything that’s good in life just vanished
I can’t feel nothing, it’s like my heart’s turned to stone”

He said, I’ve seen a lotta summers come and go
And son, if there’s one thing that I know…

[Chorus]
“Nothing lasts forever and thank God for that
Just keep holding on… you’ll find your way back
It’s the lows that make the highs so high
You gotta go through the dark to find the light
There will be ups and downs, but when the good times turn bad
Nothing lasts forever and thank God for that”

(And then he told me…)
We got married straight outta school, we couldn’t wait to be together
You never met two kids so young and so in love
But working two jobs and raising three kids, there were years we were barely talkin’
But things change, we made it through though it was rough

Now I ain’t sayin’ you’ll all be fine
But this too will pass, given time… Cause…

[Repeat Chorus]

“There will be ups and downs, but when the good times turn bad
Nothing lasts forever and thank God for that”

I’m Glad You Left Me

It’s starting to snow
There’s a bitter winter wind
This house has never been
So empty or so cold

Seems so long ago
Those promises we made
Never thought so much could change
Blow away like chimney smoke

Chorus
And I could see us hanging on for ten more years
And we’d say it’s for the sake of the kids
But once they’re gone, and there’s nothing left, and we’re too old to start again
You’d have no reason not to finally quit
I’m glad you left me… when you did

These December days
Gets dark before you know
The taillights flash as the movers go
Disappear down the lane

Taking away
Everything that was
All our time together lost
Gone without a trace

Repeat Chorus

And I could never, ever fill you up
And you could never believe you were good enough

Repeat Chorus

Laughin’ Til It Hurt

There’d be a horn in the driveway, I’d be gone like a shot
Jeans and tight t-shirt, ready to rock
Fighting’ for shotgun, burnin’ out with a squeal
Me ‘n the boys were rollin’, ‘n it made me feel

For once, like I belonged
That I was not the only one

(Chorus)
We were kids gettin’ crazy
Roarin’ down the back roads on a Friday night
Revved up, doin’ eighty
Lettin’ loose, we were young and we were alive
Always jokin’, rules were made to be broken
Explodin’ bright, like fireworks
And laughin’, laughin’, laughin’
Laughin’ til it hurt

We’d be talkin’ fast, everybody all at once
'Bout the girls that we’d ask out if we just had the guts
The radio cranked, drumming on the dash
Singing with the chorus as the world flashed past

We were close as brothers then
And we were wild and innocent

(Repeat Chorus)

Now those days are long gone
We’ve grown and moved on
From time to time I see those guys
And raise a glass
Have some laughs
Lord, it takes me back

(Repeat Chorus)

Miracle On The Hudson

We take off late, delayed by snow
I can see the towers of Manhattan and the Hudson down below
And on the left, a flock of geese
Like a squadron of fighter jets flying in a perfect V

Then there’s a bang and the smell of smoke
From the sudden quiet I can tell that both the engines have been blown
The plane banks around, but we’re dropping fast
The captain comes on the intercom, says “Brace for impact”

[Chorus]
And time slows down, things become so clear
Little worries, petty grudges, somehow disappear
The only thing that I’m sure of
Is how much I love you girl, cause in the end, all we have is love

We had a fight this morning, can’t remember why
But I slammed the door as I left, I didn’t say goodbye
Now I’m thinking, please, don’t let that be
The last thing I say to you, your last memory of me

As we go down, the tail hits first
Crash landing on the river, an engine breaks off, somethin’ bursts
Water pouring in, gas fumes all around
I write “I love you” on a card, leave it my pocket to be found

[Repeat Chorus]

The headlines are calling it a miracle
And when the taxi pulls up and drops me off
And you come running ‘cross the yard
And I take you in my arms…

[Repeat Chorus]

One Paycheck Away

I drive for Uber after my shift ends
But even then, it ain’t enough
I took a payday loan so we could keep on goin’
But the interest just keeps piling up

(Chorus)
Cause we’re behind on the rent and getting deeper in debt
Ain’t much more that we can take
Awake at 4 a.m. covered in cold sweat
Trying to make another day
The streets are one paycheck away

I went down to the food bank ‘cause you can’t eat pride
Gotta box of groceries, no questions asked
But what kills me is that look of pity in their eyes
One day, gonna pay every bit back

(Repeat Chorus)

(Well now…)
Jenny got sick and needed urgent care
My heart stopped when I got the bill
Ain’t got no medical and it don’t seem fair
What they charge for a few pills

(Repeat Chorus)

I’ve always been a fighter, but my fight’s all gone
And I don’t know what else to do
So I spent my last twenty on the Powerball
I got nothing left to lose

(Repeat Chorus)

Make Your Own Change

My world fell apart, and I crashed so hard, had nowhere left to go
Somehow found myself on the backroads headed home
Passed an old fruit stand sayin’ “Fresh eggs and Georgia peaches” so
For old time’s sake, I stopped to get me some

Didn’t see no one in that July sun as I bit into the sweetest peach
So I looked around, wonderin’ how to pay
Saw a few bucks in an old shoe box and a message that hit me like a train:
A handwritten sign saying “Make your own change”

Chorus
Runnin’ so fast, I lost track of the reason
I wasted years and I let love slip away
I came back to find myself some healin’
Cause I can’t keep going on this way
I know…you gotta make your own change

I tried my best to fill the emptiness chasing money and success
I tried everything now there’s only one thing left
Never crossed my mind til I saw that sign I’d been waiting on somethin’ else
To come and to fix what I gotta fix myself

Repeat Chorus

I came back to find myself some healin’
Cause I can’t keep going on this way
I know…you gotta make your own change

Daddy’s Girl

When I was young you were my hero
I wore a ball cap just like yours and tried to be like you
I’d follow you everywhere I could
I was your little shadow
A little helper with a head of curls
Everyone would always say I sure
Was daddy’s girl

But I could never be the son you wanted
No matter how I tried you’d always find something wrong
I guess you thought that being stern
Would teach me to to be tougher
But what I wanted I could never earn
I’d have given anything in the world
To be daddy’s girl

I keep on waiting for you to say the words
The more you don’t, the more it hurts
To be daddy’s girl

On Sunday’s, I call home like a good daughter
I don’t know why I can’t stop hoping that you’ll change
That you’ll love me in return
And you’ll finally see me
You’d think by now that I’d have learned
How not to care but I still yearn
To be daddy’s girl

I keep on waiting for you to say the words
The more you don’t, the more it hurts
To be daddy’s girl
I’m still daddy’s girl

Till The Morning Comes

C’mon baby, let's open that bottle we’ve been savin’
This life’s for livin’, I’m through with the waitin’
I’ve been thinkin’ and I’ve come to a hard decision
Don’t try to argue, I just need you to listen

I’m gonna… stop the chemo cause baby, it really ain’t workin’
I wanna be here with you, without hurtin’
And I believe it ain’t the time we’re given
It’s the choices we make and how we live it

[Chorus]
And babe, we’ve got tonight
Let’s watch the sun go down
Every little thing’s so beautiful
I see that clearly now
Let’s stay up late and talk
Like we did when we were young
And honey, hold me all night long
Until the morning comes

When I put that ring on your finger, we both cried, we were so happy
There were tears through the years, but I mostly remember us laughing
So come on and show me that smile, it’s all good
There ain’t nothing I’d change even if I could

[Repeat Chorus]

Let’s stay up late and talk
Like we did when we were young
And honey, hold me all night long
Until the morning comes

C’mon baby, let's open that bottle we’ve been savin’…

Christmas – Going Home

The driver says, “Merry Christmas, son
This snow reminds me of Saskatchewan
This is the last stop - end of the line
This bus won’t make it up the hill tonight”

The snow’s piled high on all the roofs
The cars are buried, nothing moves
I cut through old man Frenchy’s place
A few miles to go, but I’m on my way

(Chorus)
The smell of wood smoke lingers like a memory
My heart is full to overflowing with a sense of peace
For years I’ve wandered alone along a lonesome road
Now I hear the calling of something come to lead me home
It’s Christmas and I’m going home

I can see so clear on this winter night
The fields are lit with an angel’s light
The only sound is my own breath
The only tracks are my footsteps

(Repeat Chorus)
(Repeat Chorus)

Album: Everyday Miracle

Everyday Miracle

I hold this old guitar
Here in my arms
It lets my aching heart
Say what it couldn’t say any other way

There’s a promise in these chords
There must be something more
Cause from nothing, beauty’s born
A little proof of a bigger truth

(Chorus)
We can search the stars and skies to find a sign or reason why
Looking for some kind of meaning in this world
I see it in the smile of a little child
I see it in the eagle, high and wild
It’s an everyday
It’s an everyday
Miracle

I got used to being alone
But with you I’m finally home
Your love makes me whole
Sets something free inside of me

Now… every day’s a gift
And for each one I got left
I’m gonna give you my best
I’m in wonder of your sweet love

(Chorus)
We can search the stars and skies to find a sign or reason why
Looking for some kind of meaning in this world
I see it in the hope that sunrise brings
I see it in the green poking up in spring
It’s an everyday
It’s an everyday
Miracle

I see it in the storm on a summer night
I see it in the light shining in your eyes
It’s an everyday
It’s an everyday
Miracle

Keep On

When your world is crumblin’ and you’re this damn close to breakin’
It’s too much to take, it’s just too tough to bear
Through the long nights, the hardest part’s the waitin’
Imaginin’ the worst and tryin’ not to be so scared

(Chorus)
Keep on
Through the dark and hard times
Keep on
And get to where the light shines
Keep on
What’s done is done and gone
Have a little faith, better days will come
Keep on

Sometimes you wonder if it ever will get better
But you don’t have to carry everything alone
Cause we have a power when we pull together
When we reach out for some help to share the load

(Chorus)
(Chorus)
Keep on
Keep on
Keep on

Make A Family

I know this isn’t what you were expecting
We thought we’d need this bigger house
And it’d be full by now
Instead our hopes go up and down like a roller-coaster
And every month we hold our breath
Waiting on that test
But every one comes back with the same answer

(Chorus)
If you think it’s time to stop trying, that’s alright with me
We can talk with the folks at the agency
You’ve got so much love to give
I know you’ll be great at this
And honey can’t you see
There’s more than one way to make a family

You wanted a little blonde-haired boy who looked just like me
And though our son won’t have my eyes
I’ve begun to realize
There’s so much more he needs that only we can give him
Yeah, we’ll teach him how to read
Tie his shoelace, brush his teeth
And show him life is sweet when it’s lived with kindness

(Repeat Chorus)
(Repeat Chorus)
You and me, we’re gonna make a family

Rain Falling On The Water

The harbor slowly disappears into the mist
The west coast ferry diesel rumbles and groans beneath the deck
The clouds hang low, the sea and sky become one
It seems this life is one long journey back to where we all come from

(Chorus)
We are rain falling on the water
These sweet days are all we got here
We are rain falling on the water
Coming home again

It used to be I’d see you waiting at the dock
But today the pier is empty as the big boat slowly stops
All my years of wandering have led back to this place
Everything looks the same, but everything has changed

(Repeat Chorus)

I cast your ashes to the ocean wind
And let the cold waves carry them
Back to where it all begins

(Repeat Chorus)
We are rain falling on the water
Coming home again

You’d Think I’d Know By Now

I was a plus one at your twenty-year reunion
I met your long-lost high school friends
Drinking wine from plastic glasses and laughin’
Bout the crazy shit you did back then

I found out about your wild past
Teen-aged dreams I never knew you had

(Chorus)
You think I’d know by now
Everything you’re about
And after all this time
You’d think I’d figure you out
But maybe that’s the best thing
How you can still surprise me
With all those things you’d think I’d know
You’d think I’d know by now

Times got tough, I got laid off, I was worried
That you were gonna take it hard
You amazed me when you told me, “It’s a blessing
Here’s the chance to make a brand-new start”

(Repeat Chorus)

Every time you show me something new
I fall a little deeper in love with you

(Repeat Chorus)

I’ll Always Be Your Dad

Get your PJ’s on, brush your teeth, I’ll come tuck ya in
There’s a thing I need to tell ya - it ain’t an easy thing
It took me by surprise when last year I met someone new
It’s been a while, so I was hoping you could meet her too

(Chorus)
Don’t worry she ain’t gonna
Try to be your momma
She’s so scared that you’ll hate her
But just because I date her
Doesn’t mean that I don’t love you
I’m always thinkin’ of you
I ain’t going anywhere and that’s a fact
Cause no matter what, I’ll always be your dad

Well she likes to sing, likes to dance just like you do
And she loves riding horses just about as much as you
She can make ya laugh, she’s a lot of fun to be around
So maybe Saturday she could come by and hang out

(Repeat Chorus)

And she’s hears me talk about you all the time
She can’t wait to meet you, honey, it’ll be alright

(Repeat Chorus)
I’ll always be your dad
I’ll always be your dad

It Just Takes One

One Friday night her boss said he needed her to stay a little later
“If you wanna climb the ladder, you’re gonna have to do me some favors”
He was standing so close behind her, when he put a hand on her shoulder
She froze in disbelief and that’s when he got a little bolder

“But he’s the son of the owner”, they said when she went to report it
“Boys will be boys, why dontcha try to ignore it”
But then she thought ‘bout the next girl, there’d be no one to protect her
Cause if no one makes a stand there’s no way this world’s getting better

(Chorus)
And it just takes one voice to speak out
Someone to stand up
It just takes one tiny seed of truth to turn everything around
It just takes one light to shine on
Show the world what’s gone wrong
It just takes one spark to start a fire and burn it to the ground
And change will come
It just takes one

The gossip in the lunchroom was she’d hired herself a lawyer
Then gradually the other women started comin’ forward
That class action suit really cut into the corporate profits
So now he’s gone and she’s moved on to her own corner office

(Repeat Chorus)
(Repeat Chorus)

Give Forgiveness

I’d see you smoking alone in the dark
In the kitchen, killing time
And a fifth of scotch
Tearing yourself apart
Piece by tiny piece
And shot by shot

Like a drowning man, you took down
Everyone around
I was just a kid who couldn’t understand
And daddy, I still can’t

(Chorus)
This is how it begins
This is how we move on in the end
This is how to let go
The bitter lessons learned long ago
And I’m leaving this anger and shame behind
And I’m freeing this prisoner, God knows it’s time
To give forgiveness
To give forgiveness

And I was the lightning rod
That drew the thunderbolt
When you stormed and raged
But I can also recall
How you gave me your guitar
And taught me how to play

There was a constant fight between light and dark
In your heart
You had so much sadness to overcome
Oh, how I wish you’d won

[Repeat Chorus]
To give forgiveness

The Warrior

I spent a lifetime as a salesman covering Charlotte to Louisville
I had ten years left before my sweet reward
When they called me in the office, said “We got some bad news, Bill”
“With this new webstore, we don’t need ya anymore”

So I thought I’d take some time to find myself in the wilds of Wyoming
Find somethin’ real that I could hold on to
Photography had always been my dream so I brought along my Nikon
Maybe that’s what I was put on earth to do

(Chorus)
And time takes everything away
There ain’t a single thing that someday won’t change
But maybe this camera gives me a chance to make
Something that will remain
Captured in a frame

I saw a wild mustang stallion, he never knew a saddle or a bit
The telephoto caught him as the day was done
His chest was marked with vicious scars from the battles he had fought
And in the end, he’d won ‘em all but one

A challenger had come along, strong enough to win the band away
The old warrior forced out to roam alone
And I could see the spark of his untamed heart and I saw we were the same
Both searching for a place to call our own

(Repeat Chorus)

So I made some prints of my best shots and I sold ‘em at the local fairs
There I felt a spark of life I thought had gone
The mustang with the setting sun became my best-selling piece
And it made me feel that the warrior still lives on

I’d gone up to big sky country lookin’ for some meanin’
Beaten down, feelin’ lost and low
I found beauty and some grace and a little bit of healin’
And a reason for me to keep on goin’

(Repeat Chorus)

Album: A Song Waiting To Be Sung
